PAIN OF A FOOD-LESS WINTER

Lilongwe, Malawi … It is winter in Malawi. Not winter like North Dakota, Siberia, or McMurdo Station, Antarctica, but winter just the same. The southern hemisphere is opposite the U.S. and Europe and winter comes to that part of the world as summer envelopes the northern regions of the planet. This also means crop harvest is not weeks away, but they are literally months away.

For the frail, small, barefoot child (pictured) sitting on the ground in a remote African village a warm coat is necessary to ward off the chill of cold winter mornings. But a warm coat is not the only thing this child needs to survive.

More and more of Malawi’s eighteen million people are experiencing serious to critical food shortages, and the next harvest is still months away. It will not bring a new crop to this sub-Saharan nation until April 2017. On top of that is the situation in the rest of the continent, expected to see 50 million people in serious to critical food shortage conditions by the end of this year.
