Dedza District Hospital Cares for Refugees

Dedza, Malawi …A recent visit to Dedza District Hospital revealed 40% of the patients were from Mozambique. The District health officer pointed out the resources budgeted for Malawians were being shared with the neighbors. Mrs. Phiri said the facility welcomes all patients regardless of where they come from.

The facility has an HIV /AIDS prevalence rate of 10%. It registers high cases of malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV/AIDS, according to the District Health officer, Mrs. Phiri.

The facility received a consignment of medical drugs, with the support from the Malawi Project. In her remarks, the DHO thanked the Malawi Project and the MIBI whose representative handed over the donation. “We thank you for this timely donation. As a hospital we lack a lot of drugs, medical supplies and equipment to adequately manage various cases”. The need for medical support is great at this facility. It treats over 671,137 people from the surrounding area.

In his remarks, Priestly Nkhonjera, the administrator for the International Training School in Dedza, (MIBI) promised to continue helping the institution. “We are privileged to be working closely with the Malawi Project Inc. USA, and we hope to continue providing the facility with supplies”. Priestly stressed he hopes the donation will help the rural masses who access medical attention from the hospital.
